Special Issue

Scope and Themes:

This special issue invites contributions from researchers, engineers, policymakers, and industry professionals working on innovative water and wastewater solutions. Key thematic areas include:

Smart Water Infrastructure and Transportation:

Developing smart systems for the transportation of water and wastewater that utilize IoT, AI, and real-time data analytics. Exploring innovative pipeline and drainage systems that reduce water loss and energy consumption during transportation.

Advanced Wastewater Treatment Technologies:

Focus on emerging technologies such as membrane bioreactors, electrochemical treatment, and phytoremediation to improve wastewater treatment processes. Research into resource recovery from wastewater, including the extraction of valuable by-products like nutrients, bioenergy, and treated water for reuse.

Sustainable Urban Water Management:

Strategies for integrating green infrastructure and nature-based solutions (e.g., constructed wetlands, green roofs) into urban water systems to mitigate flooding, recharge groundwater, and improve water quality. Case studies on sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) and their role in creating resilient, sustainable cities (aligning with SDG 11).

Circular Economy in Water Management:

Wastewater as a resource: Exploring circular economy models where treated wastewater can be reused for agricultural, industrial, or domestic purposes. Examining the economic and environmental benefits of implementing circular economy principles in water and wastewater management.

Policy and Governance for Water and Wastewater Management:

Investigating the role of policy frameworks, governance models, and cross-border cooperation in achieving SDG 6 and SDG 13 (Climate Action) through sustainable water and wastewater management. Examples of successful public-private partnerships in water infrastructure development and wastewater treatment.

Climate Resilience and Water Systems:

Developing resilient water infrastructure to withstand extreme weather events (floods, droughts, etc.) and ensure continuous water supply and safe wastewater treatment. Implementing climate adaptation strategies for water systems to cope with future climate scenarios and secure water resources for vulnerable populations.

Link to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

This special issue strongly aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:
  • SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation – Ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – Making cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable through improved water management.
  • SDG 13: Climate Action – Taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, especially through resilient water and wastewater infrastructure.
